Brief Project Description:
My homologue and I are planning to present a girls’ workshop for 15 of the most academically talented girls at CEG Missérété. There will be 5 girls chosen from the second cycle and 10 girls from the first (8 from 4eme and 2 from 5eme), based on academic performance. The workshop will take place from Monday June 15th to Thursday June 18th. Each day will include a three- to four-hour morning session on topics related to girls’ education: family planning and nutrition, HIV/AIDS awareness, goal setting and career planning, improving study skills. At the end of the week, on Friday June 19th, we would like to take the girls to the Da Silva Museum in Porto-Novo and then to lunch.
We are requesting funding for the trip to the museum plus lunch (30,750 cfa), supplies for the workshop (4,500 cfa) and snacks for the girls (9,000 cfa).

Closing Report

Brief Project Description:
A four-day workshop (Mon-Thurs) for 16 female students, which included morning sessions on: study skills, HIV/AIDS, family planning and goal-setting. On the fifth day (Fri), we took a trip to the museum and gardens in Porto-Novo.

Dates of Project: June 15-19, 2009
Number of People Involved:
16 CEG girls, aged 14-17 (4e-1er)
2 teachers/chaperones
1 PCV

Goals of Project: To encourage girls to continue their education; to encourage girls to think about/plan for their future
Strengths of Project: We chose the top girls in each class to reach the brightest students who may need a little more encouragement. My counterpart and I worked closely together to plan the sessions.
Challenges of Project: We only chose 15 of the most talented girls and only 5 showed up the first day. We should have invited more girls to come, anticipating that some wouldn’t come. We were left to find additional girls near by (regardless of academic standing).

Budget:

Item Number Cost
Notebooks/pens 15 2.550 CFA
Snacks (cakes) 15 1.875 CFA
Snacks (cookies) 16 900 CFA
Snacks (sandwiches/bissap) 20 8.000 CFA
Museum entrance fee (students) 16 4.000 CFA
Museum entrance fee (adults) 3 3.000 CFA
Garden entrance fee 19 3.800 CFA
Lunch 20 16.400 CFA
Transport 5.000 CFA
Total Cost 45.525 CFA

Notes: The number of girls increased form 15 to 16. In addition, there were 2 chaperones (teachers) and 1 PCV. Lunch reflects the 16 girls, 3 adults and the driver (20). Transport was provided by the mayor’s office. We were given permission to use the municipal bus as long as we paid for gasoline. We paid 5.000 CFA for gasoline.
