Post: Azove

Brief Project Description:

The C.E.G. Azove girls’ football team is now in its second year, and is at a critical point in its existence. The team has been invited to participate in a national football competition in Lokossa and Dogbo, and several of the girls have been chosen to participate in women’s football training and matches being held in Parakou. The team practices every Saturday for 3 to 4 hours, with additional practices in lead up to games. The team provides for the girls an ability to learn and improve their football skills, and has provided an avenue for higher self-esteem, a stronger role in the community, and a sense of pride. They have also successfully organized and competed in two International Women’s Day matches.

The teams’ Beninese coach has requested certain materials that would aid in the continued development of the team. This includes better materials for training practices during the week, and the ability to prepare the team for future games and playing opportunities.

Dates of Project: This is an ongoing project, begun in November 2007. This sustainable project is meant to last for many years into the future.
Number of People Involved: 1 Beninese male coach, 1 Beninese male assistant coach, 22 female C.E.G Azove students (ranging from 6ieme, 5ieme, to 4ieme level). Occasionally, there is assistance from the longer established Dogbo girls’ football team captain and players, in order to encourage the girls and offer strong female athlete role models.
Some of the budget line items include repairs of worn-down and damaged shoes from wear, and filling in missing shorts for their currently being used jerseys.
