PCV 8 April 2010

Brief Project Description:
In November 2009 the PCV and a local primary school teacher created a health club at the newly constructed CEG. Fifteen 6eme students, eight boys and seven girls, volunteered to participate in the club and have since attended eight bi-monthly meetings. Meetings have covered topics such as immune system basics, nutrition, self-esteem, peer pressure, and sexual health. The club hopes to see at least five more meetings which will discuss sexually transmitted infections and contraception, career development, and effective communication skills. Club participants are also provided with numerous opportunities during the Club to learn new activities and American games as well as to engage in soccer matches and other sports. The Health Club, in collaboration with CEG and some local professionals, hope to improve the academic environment of their community’s newly built school by thus stimulating the intellectual development of some of its most motivated students. At the same time these partners hope to furnish the school with some basic educational resources in order to encourage this growth on the part of the larger student body. GAD funds would help finance t-shirts for club participants and a cabinet in order to safely store donated educational materials in order to help promote both of these goals.
