Brief Project Description:

FOOD HYGIENE SENSITIZATION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PARAKOU

This project aims to sensitize the primary school students in Parakou on the subject of food hygiene and sanitation, for the goal of changing behavior on the part of these students. This change in behavior will permit them to avoid the risk of contraction of diarrheic diseases like cholera and typhoid. The sensitization will be done through song, poetry, games, and especially theater.

The sensitization will be conducted on Wednesday November 25th, 2009 at the Ecole Primaire Public Centre DE in Parakou. The students have Wednesday afternoons off, so they will be free to attend the sensitization. The volunteers from the Corps des voluntaires beninoiose will conduct the sensitization along with input from teachers and hopefully participation from the students themselves. The sensitization will start with music and dancing to get people interested and involved. Opening remarks will be made by the school director and Ibrahim- the president of the Corps des voluntaires beninoise. Following this there will be skit that demonstrates the importance of good hygiene practices to avoid sickness. This will be followed by an information session presented by a medical doctor (or a medical student in his final year) informing the students of the diseases that can be contracted, how best to avoid them, what treatment exists, and other general facts about diarrhea diseases. There will be time afterwards for ‘Question and Answer’ for the students to pose questions to the physician. Finally there will be trivia games, where students will be given small prizes for correctly answering questions related to diarrhea. In total the sensitization is expected last 2 to 3 hours.

There is also a follow-up / monitoring effort planned to see if the objectives of the sensitization are met. If funding permits, hand washing receptacles will be placed at various points at the school, and members of the Corps des Voluntaires Beninoise will stop by from time to time to see if the children are using these facilities and practicing proper hygiene before eating.

Dates of Project: Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Number of People Involved:

The beneficiaries of this project will be the students themselves as well as the teachers, the parents of the students, and the food venders at the primary school. All will learn the importance of proper hygiene with respect to food- including keeping food covered, washing hands before eating, and preparing or consuming food in clean dishes.

The number of students reached is expected to be 687 which is the number of students in CM1 and CM2*; this includes 368 girls and 319 boys. In addition 27 food venders, 30 teachers, and 5 parents of the students will be invited. These are the numbers that will directly benefit from the sensitization, but it is hoped that others will hear about the sensitization second hand, for example friends and parents of the students.

*The total number of students in the school is 1650

Comments

GAD Coordinator: A good proposal overall. I would like more information on the gender of the non-student participants. I would also suggest finding a female doctor or medical student, to increase the gender diversity of the organizing group. Why only invite 5 parents ? Is it realistic to expect all CM1 and CM2 to come on their free afternoon ? Will as many girls be able to come as boys, given potential household obligations ? If Tim takes into account suggestions and answers questions, recommend funding.
GAD Finance: I was wondering about the gender breakdown of the non-student participants as well. I think that it is great that Tim is working with Corps des Volontaires Beninoises. I hope they are able to do follow-up. Tim said that the school agreed to continue to provide soap if the receptacles are put in place. Maybe Corps des Volontaires Beninoises and the school can make a contract to make sure the soap is always available. Recommend funding.
GAD Specialist: I agree with both of you. If Tim can provide the requested information, project should be funded.
