Brief Project Description:
A selection of the older, secondary students residing at a local orphanage painted a world map. The map is about 3 meters long by 1.8 meters high. The children were heavily involved in marking off the grid for the map by measuring and drawing out the lines and taping off the box where the map would fit inside. Next, after watching a demonstration on how to roll a paint roller, the kids took over and finished the base coat of paint. After the paint was dry, the grid for the world map was drawn out and the countries were meticulously sketched out. Then, white paint was mixed with various colorants used to paint the individual countries. Afterward, when all the countries were painted, permanent markers were used to label major oceans and each country, in French. Thicker markers were used for larger countries and fine tipped markers were used for smaller countries.

In order to reap all the benefits of having a world map painted, lesson plans will be adapted from the Peace Corps World Map manual to teach the kids at the orphanage about geography.

Dates of Project: November 28, 2009 to January 2, 2010
Number of People Involved:
7 secondary school students (4 boys and 3 girls) of the local orphanage, and 2 Peace Corps Volunteers (2 women) were directly involved in the painting process: drawing out the grid, painting a base coat of paint, sketching the world map, painting the individual countries and labeling all the countries in French. All the children (40 children between the ages of 2 years to 17 years) and the staff members see the map on a daily basis and can learn from the map. Furthermore, several NGOs and other organizations will be able to see and enjoy the map while sitting in the welcoming area of the orphanage.

GAD Coordinator: Pretty standard world map project, all the receipts check out. She painted country names on the map, which is good, and is using the clear varnish trick! Glad to see them planning a geography lesson from the map. I would like to know how the kids were chosen and how/if other adults were involved. If questions are answered, recommend funding.
GAD Finance: The age breakdown of the participants should also be included. Recommend funding once questions are answered.
