Ouesse April 2012

Post: Ouesse

Date(s) of project: June 1st, 2012 – June 8th, 2012

Brief description of Project:

Children are very susceptible to many different kinds of diseases such as eye infections, diarrhea and parasites. Simple hand washing behavior can reduce the chance of getting these kinds of diseases and further ensures healthy lifestyle. Therefore, I am planning to give hand-washing sensitizations to primary school students in Ouesse with the Beninese counterpart who will act as a facilitator. I have chosen two primary schools where I would like to give a local language sensitization. First I will teach the materials to the primary school teachers in French and then I will have them help me present the hand washing demonstration to the primary school children in local language. Hence, I would like to receive grant money for the hand washing stations in order for students to be able to practice good hygiene skills on a daily basis. The directors have agreed to pay for pump water and continue to provide soap for their schools. The water will be used and refilled from the closest pump by 2 students (one girl and one boy). Every week, teacher will choose 2 students randomly from a hat that contains students’ names. To increase the effectiveness of the project, I will form a team of students who will monitors and encourages their peers for hand washing stations. They will participate in the training session with animator. I will ask each teacher to select one student who is motivated and responsible. Through hand washing sensitizations I will reach more than 500 students with the hope that they will be able to cite five situations when they are supposed to hand wash. This will be a great opportunity to instill responsibility and leadership in the local students since they themselves will maintain and use the hand washing stations. Furthermore, the students can also raise awareness of the importance of hand washing within their families. These hand washing sensitizations will be given to two classes per day for three days. After the sensitizations, I will visit each primary school once a month to see whether or not students are properly practicing hand washing. I will evaluate the project with the help of teachers and directors using a questionnaire to measure the impact on the community and the schools.
