Komde October 2009

Proposal

Post: Komde
Dates of Project: May 2009 – September 2010 (Note: funds requested pertain only to the initial stages of this project hence the
current request for GAD financing. Submitter requests to be allowed to file an activity report at the close of three months in spite of
the continuance of the project itself)

Brief Project Description:

The project goal is to train three groups of ten mother leaders in preventative health messages so that through regular home visits these mother leaders will transfer their knowledge to other families in their villages. Meetings will be held on a monthly basis and will
cover topics ranging from hand washing to breastfeeding to malnutrition. Each mother leader is a self-selected volunteer in
charge of (on average) three to five households within the village. The project is structured so that after six months the topics
previously covered are discussed again to both review the information and allow the mother leaders themselves to take initiative and
participate more fully in monthly meetings (i.e. put together role plays, create songs, tell stories and/or testimonials). Mother
leaders will also be given a chance at the beginning of each meeting to discuss problems or obstacles they may be facing in the course of home visits (or in daily life in general) as well as time to practice their peer education skills. More specifically this latter aspect
would include practicing teaching methods within smaller groups of two or three or in front of the group as a whole. Ultimately the project aims to empower thirty women through both a knowledge transfer and peer education skills to more effectively disseminate preventative health messages to the wider community. GAD funds would help finance a uniform t-shirts and teaching supplies for the mother leaders.

Number of People Involved:
30 Women (25 – 45) will be trained as Mother Leaders in basic preventative health.
Community Beneficiaries (will receive preventative health messages from Mother Leaders):
Women (20 – 65): 180
Men (20 – 65): 180
Girls (<19): 270
Boys (<19): 180
Total: 810
Where 1 “household” = 2 women (20 – 65), 2 men (20 - 65), 3 girls (<19), 2 boys (<19) and each Mother Leader visits on average 3 households each month.

Closing Report

Brief Project Description:
Three groups of ten mother leaders are trained in preventative health messages and perform house visits in order to transfer their knowledge to other families in their villages. Meetings are held on a monthly basis and cover topics such as hand washing, breastfeeding, and nutrition. After the halfway point topics are revisited to both review the information and allow the mother leaders themselves to take initiative and participate more fully in meetings (i.e. put together role plays, create songs, share stories and/or testimonials). Ultimately the project aims to empower thirty women through both a knowledge transfer and peer education skills to more effectively disseminate preventative health messages to the wider community.

Goals of Project:
Train thirty women as mother leaders in basic preventative health; reduce the number of reported illnesses, nutritionally deficient meals, and underweight children; increase the number of women able to cite the key times to wash hands.

Since the project is still ongoing data for many of the above objectives is not available although an ending census is planned for August (the results of which will be compared with the beginning census completed in September). However mother leaders consistently report improvements and positive reception during home visits.

Strengths of Project: The project’s biggest strength is the participatory approach of the monthly meetings which both push mother leaders to critically engage with topics while at the same time fostering a sense of community and support among members.
Challenges of Project: Going to meetings on time. One group consistently showed up hours late and often rescheduled meetings. To counteract this we tried 1) changing meeting time/date/place 2) announcing meeting with town crier 3) discussing problem with village members and lenders, all to little avail. Another challenge has been getting the women to take seriously the “reporting critical events” such as births, deaths, sicknesses, their gut reaction is usually just to say everything is fine.
