Brief Project Description: On Thursday, the Surveillant Général of CEG Gomparou will ask students to wash the wall in the morning so that the PCVs can measure the rectangle for the map and paint it ocean blue in the afternoon. On Friday, the Beninese teachers and the PCVs will work together to make the grid and begin drawing the countries. On Saturday, the two female Beninese teachers will run a mini-workshop for the four female students focused on goal setting before painting in the countries. The PCVs and Beninese teachers will help supervise the female students as they paint in the countries. After the paint dries, the PCVs and Beninese teachers will write the country names and finish the map with a layer of varnish.

The Beninese teachers comprise of the only two female teachers in CEG Gomparou, my counterpart and another male teacher. The four female students consist of one student from each promotion who has already been selected through an essay competition announced throughout the school. The female students were asked to write two to three paragraphs that answered the following questions:
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
- What are your goals?
- How will you achieve them?
My counterpart helped me read the essays and select the best one from each promotion.

The female Beninese teachers will primarily lead the mini-workshop. The first teacher will open up with a discussion on role models. She will pose the following questions:
- Who are your role models?
- Who are the respectful women in your neighborhood, village, commune, etc?
- Why do you respect them?
Afterwards, I will facilitate a discussion among the students to talk about their future goals, which will also include a presentation of their essays. Then, the second female teacher will do an activity called “Life Line” (“Ligne de la vie”) with the girls. The girls will mark important events on a timeline and identify the moment that will be the most difficult to achieve. The mini-workshop will end by brainstorming how to overcome these challenges.

Dates of Project: TBD: March 26-28, 2009? April 2-4, 2009?
Number of People Involved: Ten people will be directly involved with the project – at least 2 PCVs, 4 Beninese teachers and 4 female students. However, the project will benefit the approximately eight hundred students of CEG Gomparou as well as the greater population of villagers in Gomparou. Furthermore, the location of the map will affect the commune of Banikoara because the map will be on a wall that faces the road running from Gomparou to Founougo.

Comments

GAD Coordinator Comments: This looks like a great project; I especially like the goal-setting workshop. It would be nice if the budget weren’t in French. Recommend funding.

GAD Finance: Recommend Funding. This looks like a very thorough project, with many new aspects. I think this would be a great example for a map project for other volunteers.

GAD Specialist: Agree with both of you. Recommend funding.
