Angaradebou December 2008

Project Description: Malnutrition affects the Alibori more than any other region in Benin. To help combat this I have created a one day formation designed to teach students and one community member about the 3 food groups, why it is important to eat well, as well as about malnutrition its symptoms, its causes and ways to treat it. Participants will also learn why the nutrition needs of children and pregnant women are different than for other people. Here is a tentative schedule for the formation:

8:00-8:30 Introductions
8:30-9:30 Make Breakfast
• The participants will learn how to make a nutritious bouille
9:30-10:00 Clean up
10:00-11:30 Food Groups, good nutrition, review the receipt for the bouille
• The participants will learn the 3 food groups, the advantages of eating well, what can happen if you do not and why the bouille we made was better for them than what they traditionally would eat
11:30-12:00 Break/Games
12:00-13:30 Malnutrition
• The participants will learn the symptoms, causes, treatment and ways to prevent malnutrition
13:30-15:00 Make Lunch
• The participants will learn to make a nutritious sauce that we will eat with rice for lunch
15:00-16:00 Nutrition for Children and Pregnant Women
• The participants will learn that the nutrition needs of children and pregnant women are different from other people and what can happen if they are malnourished.
16:00-17:30 Review
The participants will finish their day with games designed to review the information covered that day.

I plan to hold these formations in the 10 villages in the Alibori that have both a CEG and a Peace Corps volunteer. The list of villages the volunteer includes, Karimama, Malanville, Guene, Angaradebou, Kandi, Gogonou, Sori, Sonsoro, Banikora and Foundagou. The role that the volunteer will play will be that of moderator. They will be helping me run these formations, helping to make sure that all information is understood by the participants. In the end it is my hope that the participants will leave this formation know and understanding the importance of eating well for both genders and all age groups and to use their resources i.e. food to its best nutritional capabilities.
Dates of Project: The first formation is to be held January 19, 2009 in Sonsoro. However, I will be going on vacation the following week so the other formations will not be able to be held until I come back in February. I have been in contact with the directors of all the CEG's and as of right now no other dates besides Sonsoro have been set. It is my desire to have all the formations done by the end of March or at the absolute latest mid-April. Because I am working with school students I must work around/with their school schedules.
Number of People Involved: In each village I am asking 3 boys and 3 girls from each grade (6eme -3eme) to participate in the formation as well as one French speaking community member for a total of 25 people in each village receiving information. In all, 250 will have gone through my nutrition formation. The reasons for my focusing on students and not adults in the community are that 1. it has been my experience that it is very difficult if not impossible to bring about behavior change in adult populations, but if you can get people when they are young you have a chance of influencing how they will live their lives as adults and perhaps bring about change that way and 2. by working with students communication will be much easier and the community will not be burdened by the necessity of finding a translator. However, it is important that this information reach the older population and people who already have children, which is why a French speaking community member is being asked to attend this formation as well. I want this person to be someone who is respected in his/her community so that others will listen when they share their information and hold trainings, if they choose to do so.

Comments

GAD Coordinator: This is a resubmit from last month. The project description is much more informative this time around. It would be nice if the proposal were slightly more professional and without the French words that have direct English translations, such as bouille, but I have been in correspondence with PCV all month about this project and I know that they have put a lot of effort into getting the proposal up to this level. Also, I still think it looks like a great project even with the occasional French word included. Recommend funding.

GAD Finance: I completely agree. It still seems fairly unprofessional in its wording, but she has definetly improved since the last submission. The project seems thorough and well planned. Recommend Funding.

GAD Specialist: recommend funding too.

Closing Report

PCV did not submit a closing report, but did submit receipts and returned 3,700 CFA to the Parakou cashbox.
